Chchchchanges Coming in 2017

We are so excited to bring you the Piney River Brewing Company 2017 release calendar!

Twelve ounce cans are headed your way! There will be more information about that later, and actual 12 oz cans sooner rather than later, too. Stay tuned for that!

We are releasing–in limited quantities–new canned beers throughout the year. They are Raise a Ruckus Imperial Stout, River Access Ozarks Lager and Aux Arcs Saison. 

And that foeder, those barrels, the original BARn is officially where we’ve got the funk going on.  The first of our Farm Raised Funk was Lizzie Twister, the first funkified beer from the BARn.  We plan to release even more Farm Raised Funk in 2017.

Thank you so much for raising a pint with us in 2016.  None of this would be possible without your incredible support. Let’s raise a few more together in the upcoming year!

First of the Piney River Farm Raised Beers…Lizzie Twister

We’ve made a new beer that’s selling like hot cakes this summer in the tap room. Lizzie Twister is a Berliner-style weisse beer which means that it’s a style of wheat beer traditionally made in Germany. In fact, a Berliner weisse is a tart wheat beer. This style of beer is also traditionally low ABV, so Lizzie is a mere 4% which is nice and easy on a hot day in the Ozarks.

To make this beer, we brewed the beer then pithed lactobacillus into the beer while it was in the fermentation vessel. The lactobacillus when used properly gives the beer a slightly tart flavor.

This is the first beer of this type that we’ve made. We needed to wait until we had a separate brewing space for beers that have things like lactobacillus in them. That’s what we’re using our first brew space–the BARn–for these days. And we’re calling these beers “Farm Raised”.

Right now Lizzie Twister is only in kegs, so we’ve had it at some events like the Springfield Craft Beer Bash and a St. Louis Craft Beer Week tap takeover at Three Kings in Des Peres. We’ll have it at the Great Arkansas Beer Fest this weekend. And we’re serving up pints of it all weekend, every weekend at the BARn tap room. We’re filling cr0wlers and growlers with it, too.

So let me tell you a little story about how the name Lizzie Twister came to be…

Waaay back, a long time ago, maybe even back in our home brewer days, Brian and I heard about this spot on the Big Piney River. This spot is upstream from us. It’s not even a spot we know well, but the spot has a great name…Lizzie Twister.

Brian and I both remember seeing that name on a river map and thinking to ourselves and saying to each other, “That would be a great beer name.” So we tucked Lizzie Twister away for a long time until the “right” beer came along that should be named Lizzie Twister.

Got a slightly tart, easy drinking beer? Got the name Lizzie Twister? Seemed like a match made in heaven.

If you’re like us, you know there isn’t a hill or holler or river bend in the Ozarks that isn’t named something for some reason. How in the world did a spot on the Big Piney River get named Lizzie Twister? Here’s what we’ve been told:

The Jackson Brothers were at wit’s end. Their raft had hung up in the bend below Hell’s Roaring Rocky Shoals on the Big Piney. It was hot, the river had been low, and now they were faced with untangling the mess that had occurred that day.

It was late in the day, they had some homebrew and food along, so they decided to just build a small campfire before dark, heat up some beans, have a brew or two before bedtime, and tackle their problem in the morning.

Right before getting the bedrolls out, there was a noise in the woods next to the gravel bar. They wondered what kind of critter would be coming toward the fire and the voices.

Out of the woods stepped Lizzie from Hazleton Springs. She had heard the voices from up river, walked down to check the boys out. The Jackson Brothers knew her well.

“Hey, Lizzie, we are in a jam,” they said. “Our raft is all twisted up. Can you help?”

Lizzie gave the boys a sly look from corner of her eyes. She clucked her tongue, put her hands on her hips and asked, “It depends. Do you have any Hot Date Ale in a can?”

And all the problems were solved.

If you come to the BARn to try Lizzie Twister, you can enjoy it plain or with a shot of fruit syrup (which is also traditionally added to Berliner weisse beers in Germany). Raise a Pint with Us for CASA

IMG_1110.JPGWe do lots of beer events. We get asked to donate to lots of events. This weekend we get to give back to a great area cause. It’s right here, close to home, at our very own BARn. And you can join us!

This Saturday, July 16 from 2 to 7 p.m. we are hosting a fundraiser at the BARn for CASA of South Central Missouri.

What is CASA?

The Court Appointed Special Advocate Association (CASA), together with its state and local member programs, supports and promotes court-appointed volunteer advocacy so every abused or neglected child in the United States can be safe, have a permanent home and the opportunity to thrive.

Over 600,000 kids a year will filter through US foster care and our family court system. The average child will spend 20 months in the foster system, changing homes an average of three times. CASA organizes volunteers that work with these kids, making a difference in their lives.

We are fortunate enough to have a CASA organization in South Central Missouri that makes a difference in the lives of our area kids every day.

On Saturday we are giving a portion of every pint sold to CASA. Joining us in supporting CASA is Nashville-based singer/songwriter Michael Connors. He is donating his musical talent to the day. CASA staff and volunteers will be here, too, grilling burgers and hot dogs for sale to benefit the organization.

If beer isn’t your thing, you can still raise a pint of Andy’s Homemade Root Beer while enjoying a burger or dog and listening to the tunes. Or just stop by and drop a donation in the CASA bucket.

Just like every day at the BARn, families are welcome. Dogs (on a leash) are welcome. And always, please drink responsibly.

We are honored to have this opportunity to give back to a local cause. We hope you will join us.

How We Celebrated 5 Years on the Piney River Farm

Five years.

Five years?!

FIVE YEARS!!!

In February, during our grand opening weekend for the new brewery, I told people that five years ago, if you would have told me that there would be a new 12,000 square foot barn on our farm with a new brewhouse, new cold storage, new canning line, etc., I would have laughed and said, “You’ve obviously been drinking.”

And here we are, five years later with all of those things and celebrating our 5th Aleiversary to boot.

For the first time at an Aleiversary, Brian and I did not spend a crazy portion of the day working—i.e. parking cars, changing out trash, etc. Instead, we were able to divvy up employees to cover all the non-stop tasks, and we jumped in every once in awhile to pour a few beers, make change, give an employee a break, etc. We were able to spend some time with some of our retail and distributor partners, and best of all, we were able to talk to many of you!IMG_0119IMG_0118

IMG_0123Also for the first time, we were open on Friday and Sunday of the Aleiversary Weekend, too. Friday we spent most of the day into the evening in the tap room. There were some people that came out at those times because they wanted a four-pack of Mule Team or they wanted to drink some of the small batch beers, but they didn’t want to face the Aleiversary crowd. (If you came out on Sunday and hoped to see us…sorry…we were recovering from the Aleiversary after party with our staff.)

IMG_0126IMG_0124Saturday started out with brilliant sun and a light wind that got colder as the sun disappeared behind clouds. Several folks camped out in the lawn using the deck as a windbreak, and everyone else pretty much piled into the tap room where they somehow still found room for dancing to Casey Lynne and the Dealbreakers and Deep Fried Squirrel.

Aleiversary 2The 2016 Mule Team IPA and the Seventh Trumpet Imperial Stout were enjoyed by many as part of the Aleiversary festivities. Cases of Mule Team four-packs found their way out the door. Paw Paw French Saison came back again this year, with plenty to go around (instead of one little keg). Aux Arcs (French, pronounced “Ozarks”) a dry-hopped French saison made its debut, and more than one person claimed it to be a new favorite. All of those beers are small batches, but they will be available for awhile in the tap room, and they will make their way into the retail market in very limited numbers of kegs. Hopefully, you’ll get your chance to try them, too.

IMG_0127Twisted Mike’s Food Truck and Mike and Julie’s Smoked Meats stayed busy with their food fare. Did you try the fries from Twisted Mike’s? I think they were called “crack fries”, and they were craaazy good. Can we get a show of hands from those than enjoyed Mike and Julie’s nearly famous nachos? Yes, that was quite a few of you. Suffice it to say, in Brewcyrus, we like our beer with potatoes.

We are still pinching ourselves that five years are in the books here on the Piney River Farm. We wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for all of you, the great beer drinking folks that have supported us in so many ways over the past 5 years.

Things to Know Before the Big Event

5th aleiversary posterFirst and foremost, we will be celebrating with Piney River beer all weekend long–Friday from 2 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 12 to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m.  The BIG event will be Saturday’s party with lots of beer, two food trucks and two bands.  Here is a little bit more information about Saturday’s event so you are prepared!

The Aleiversary is free admission as our thanks to you for your great support over the past 5 years!

The Aleiversary is open to all ages. We will give all attendees over the age of 21 a wristband so you don’t have to show your ID every time you want a beer. If you don’t have a wristband, you will be asked to show ID and our servers can provide you with a wristband.

Pets are welcome, but they MUST be on a leash.

There will be two locations serving beer—outside and inside the tap room.   You will need a “beer ticket” to purchase a beer. All beers are $4. Some beers are in a 16 oz. cup and some are in a 12 oz. cup, but they are all $4. There will be a tent outside where you can purchase beer tickets with cash or credit. You will also be able to purchase beer tickets inside the tap room with cash or credit. There is no limit to the number of beer tickets you buy at one time. Please be aware: you cannot hand cash to a server and purchase a beer. You must hand over a beer ticket. This will make the beer lines move much faster.

There will be two food trucks at the Aleiversary—Mike & Julie’s Smoked Meats and Mike’s Twisted Food Truck. They will begin serving food at 12 p.m. until 7 p.m. or until they run out of food.

Please bring a DD to the Aleiversary. Andy’s Homemade Root Beer will be available in the tap room. Canned soda and bottled water will be available at the beer ticket tent or in the tap room.

Rain is in the forecast, but we have plans in place to keep you warm and dry regardless of the weather.

We will have every seat possible open in the tap room and seating for over 100 on the two decks at the picnic tables. You are welcome to bring camp chairs to use on the brewery grounds or on the deck, too. We will pipe the band’s music from indoors outside off the decks.

OUTSIDE ALCOHOL IS ABSOLUTELY NOT PERMITTED. We have a wide variety of beers to choose from for everyone to enjoy.

Last call will be at 6:30 p.m.

Due to the large number of people in attendance at the Aleiversary, we will not fill growlers, do sample trays or give tours on 3/19 at the BARn.

Finally, 2016 Mule Team IPA will be for sale on draft outside and inside at the BARn at the Aleiversary. We have a limited number of 4-packs of our 2016 Mule Team IPA for sale, $15 each. You will be able to purchase a ticket for a 4-pack (or more) of 2016 Mule Team IPA at the outside tent or inside the tap room. You will receive a ticket for your 4-pack(s), and you can redeem it as you leave.

Party Like It’s Been Five (?!) Years on the Farm

5th aleiversary posterPiney River Brewing Company is celebrating their fifth anniversary on Sat., Mar. 19th at the brewery in Bucyrus.

The “5th Aleiversary” party will be held at the BARn—the brewery and tap room located off Junction ZZ—from 12 to 7 p.m.

“Once again, we are looking forward to enjoying a beautiful spring day in the Ozarks at our upcoming Aleiversary,” Joleen Durham, co-founder and owner, said.

Durham described the Aleiversary as “the biggest event in Bucyrus”. Last year’s event brought in almost 1,000 people from across the region to the Piney River Farm.

“The event is family-friendly, and there is no charge for admission,” Durham said. “Many Piney River fans look forward to this day at the BARn all year long.”

The Piney River tap room will pour several beers that are available year round in the tap room including Float Trip Ale, Black Walnut Wheat, McKinney Eddy Amber Ale, Bronzeback Pale Ale, Old Tom Porter, Missouri Mule India Pale Ale and Masked Bandit IPA.

Crankbait Cream Ale, the brewery’s spring seasonal will also be available. Paw Paw French Saison will be poured again for the day, and some yet-to-be-named beers may also be available.

“Our most anticipated limited release beer to be available at the Aleiversary will be our Mule Team India Pale Ale,” Brian Durham, co-founder and head brewer, said.

Mule Team IPA is an imperial India pale ale that was first brewed for Piney River’s 2014 anniversary event.

“This year’s Mule Team IPA has strong hop flavor and aroma,” Brian Durham said, explaining that the 2016 imperial IPA will be 10 percent alcohol by volume.

“All of the brewing staff is very excited about releasing this year’s version of Mule Team IPA at the Aleiversary,” Brian Durham said.

Mule Team IPA takes almost a month to complete from brewing to packaging. The “5th Aleiversary Limited Release” Mule Team label thanks the team—“dedicated employees, partnerships with distributors, support of friends, neighbors and craft beer lovers”—that has helped the brewery achieve success over the past five years.Mule TeamNEW

Mule Team IPA and the other beers will be available all weekend long, beginning on Friday afternoon when the tap room opens and going through Sunday evening, if they do not run out.

“Saturday’s party can be a little too busy for some people, so we will plan to have enough Mule Team IPA available to last all weekend long,” Joleen Durham said. “You will be able to enjoy a pint in the tap room or purchase a four-pack to take home.”

Durham noted that because Mule Team IPA is only released once a year, many people purchase multiple four-packs to ration it out throughout the year.

“Mule Team IPA is a beer that can be enjoyed a few months down the road if it is cellared properly,” she said.

In addition to the handcrafted ales, the Aleiversary will feature two bands providing live music—Casey Lynne and the Dealbreakers and Deep Fried Squirrel, both from Springfield. Both bands feature multi-talented instrumentalists and singers that perform Americana, folk and rock covers and original songs.

Two food trucks will be available on the 19th. Mike and Julie’s Smoked Meats of Huggins will provide unique handmade foods such as Irish nachos and smoked meat sliders. Twisted Mikes Food Truck of Springfield will provide a tasty twist on traditional sandwiches, tacos and fries.

Piney River Brewing is located on Durham’s 80-acre farm, operating out of a restored 70-year old barn. Durham founded the brewery with his wife, Joleen, in 2010 with a 10-gallon brewing system.

In 2015, Piney River Brewing produced over 2,200 barrels of beer. A $1.2 million expansion was completed on the farm, allowing the brewery to increase production with a new brewhouse, canning line and cold storage.

The brewery has distribution throughout most of Missouri and Arkansas.

A Grand Opening & You’re Invited

piney river farm with signPiney River Brewing is planning a grand opening weekend for their new brewing facility on February 5, 6, and 7, 2016. The weekend event will begin with ribbon cutting at 2 p.m. that Friday on the Piney River Farm in Bucyrus.

Piney River Brewing recently completed the largest expansion in the history of the brewery. The expansion includes a 12,000 square foot barn located near the current “BARn” production facility and tap room.

The new building houses a custom built 15-barrel three-vessel brew house from Criveller Company of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada; four 60-barrel fermentation vessels and two 60-barrel bright beer tanks from Paul Mueller Company in Springfield, MO and a Series Three eight-head automatic canner from Wild Goose Canning in Boulder, CO.

This expansion is the third expansion since the company opened its doors in March 2011 as a nanobrewery, brewing 10 gallons of beer at a time.  The brewery was also the first microbrewery in the state of Missouri to can beer on site in November 2011 with an MC100 two-head Wild Goose canning machine.

The new brew house and cellar will give Piney River the capacity to brew up to 10,000 barrels of beer, with plenty of room for additional growth.  In 2015, Piney River produced just over 2,000 barrels of beer.

“Everyone that regularly visits the BARn has watched the construction progress at our brewery over the past year,” Brian Durham, head brewer and owner, said. “We are excited to have a weekend to celebrate with our friends, family and everyone that loves Piney River beer.”

The ribbon cutting is open to the public at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 5th. Joleen and Brian Durham will give tours of the new brewing facility all weekend long at the top of every hour beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday until 8 p.m. that night. Tours will be available from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 12 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There is no charge for a tour of the brewery.

In addition to the opportunity to tour the brewery throughout the weekend, Mike and Julie’s Smoked Meats will be available for purchase on Friday and Saturday.

“None of this growth would have been possible without the great support from our local community, the craft beer lovers throughout Missouri and Arkansas that have been drinking our beer for the past four years, and our distribution partners,” Durham said. “We hope that everyone that is able will join us during the grand opening weekend. We are proud to share this beautiful addition on our farm with them.”

Currently the brewery is distributed in most of Missouri and in Arkansas. Distribution is available in Missouri through Bluff City Beer in Cape Girardeau, Poplar Bluff and Herculaneum; Grellner Sales in Rolla, West Plains, Camdenton and Sedalia; Heart of America Beverage in Springfield and Joplin; NH Scheppers in Jefferson City and Columbia; and Summit Distributing in Saint Louis. Glidewell Distributing in Fort Smith distributes Piney River beer throughout the state of Arkansas.image

 

Thanksgiving Weekend on the Piney River Farm

We have so much to be thankful for out here on the Piney River Farm.  And that includes you.  You have given us incredible support over the past five years. (Five years?!)

There have been a lot of changes on the farm this past year, and we know that the BARn tap room is place that a lot of you love to visit or bring family to visit over the holidays.  And YES! we are open all weekend long after Thanksgiving.

Bring your turkey sandwiches, your turkey casserole, your turkey soup, or a pizza and come hang out with us on Friday from 2 to 9 p.m.  We’ve got just a wee bit of Sweet Potato Ale on draft and in cans, most likely for the last weekend at the BARn.

On Saturday, we’ve got your food covered, and it ain’t turkey!  Nope, Mike and Julie will be here with smoked pork and brisket sliders and those delicious fried potatoes that go so well with a Piney River beer.  The Hamburger Cows will be back in the BARn mooing original and old timey tunes, too.  We’re open from 2 to 7 p.m. on Saturday.

And finally, if you need a place to unwind after a weekend of relatives, we’re open Sunday, too from 12 to 5 p.m.

Don’t forget, you can start checking people off your Christmas list with Piney River merch–hoodies, T-shirts, pint glasses, koozies and Hydroflask stainless steel growlers.  We’ve got gift certificates, too!

Many of you have asked about touring our new brewing and canning facility.  We are not ready to offer tours yet, but we will have a grand opening for our new building and start offering regular tours of the new facility every Saturday, probably sometime in January.  Meanwhile, just tell the tap room staff if you would like to see where we started, and they can give you a tour in the original BARn.

FRI-YAY (& Saturday and Sunday, too) on the Farm Brewery

In case you haven’t already heard, the BARn tap room is now open for a lot more than Saturday!

Back in May, we kicked off Sundays on Mother’s Day weekend.  All the moms got a free pint that Sunday, and we’ve been open every Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. since then.

Beginning on Labor Day weekend, we started opening the tap room on Friday afternoon and evening 2 to 9 p.m.

As always, the BARn is family friendly.  Andy’s Homemade Root Beer is on draft for those that don’t drink beer.  We’re pet friendly, too, and there’s always a big bowl of water on the deck for our four-legged friends.  We have a Mike and Julie’s Smoked Meats at the BARn about one weekend a month, and you are welcome to bring food or snacks with you to enjoy with your beer.   We even have a gas grill on the upper deck that you can use–bring your own meat.

We always have sample trays and pints for sale.  We fill growlers and you can take home a Piney River Crowler, too.  We usually have 6 to 8 handcrafted brews on tap for your enjoyment.

We have a full merch line up–T-shirts, baseball caps, koozies, pint glasses, Hydroflask growlers, tin tackers and more.  AND we accept Visa, Mastercard and Discover.   We also have some jewelry and wood carvings available from local artists if you’re looking for something extra special from the Ozarks.

On Saturdays we try to have live music.  The music varies from solo acts to bands.  Many of the bands we hire are local artists with music and swag for sale, too.  You can stay abreast of weekend activities at the BARn by checking out our Facebook page.

If you would like a tour of the BARn, we are currently doing those on Saturdays only–usually around 4 p.m.  If you would like a tour, please tell the bar staff, and they will give you one.  Right now, the tours are limited to the small BARn, but when we get our new barn completely put together, we will give tours of it, too.

Our bigger crowds are usually at the BARn on Saturday, but we’ve heard many people say they enjoy Fridays and Saturdays because there’s less hustle and bustle at the BARn.  You can usually chat up the bar staff, and you can definitely hear the birds singing on the craft beer deck outside.

We started hauling hay out of the loft of our old barn in the summer of 2010.  We always thought we would build some type of tasting room upstairs because we figured there would be a few curious people that would want to sample the beer and see where it was made.  We thought that our tasting room would end up being a cool place for us to hang out with our friends.  We had no idea that the BARn would become a destination location in the Ozarks.  We had no idea that every weekend folks would flock from all over the state to our little farm on the Piney.  We had no idea that we were building a destination brewery.

So, thank you to all of the people that have helped our little brewery reach the point that we need to be open all weekend long.  And if you haven’t already raised a pint with us at the BARn, we are looking forward to doing that with you very soon!

3rd Annual Drink Your Part for the Houston Education Foundation Event

Houston Schools recently completed a major construction project. HEF purchased new computers for the new media center that is in the 2nd floor of this new construction.

Piney River Brewing is hosting a fundraiser for the Houston Education Foundation (HEF) on Saturday, September 5th at the BARn Tap Room.

Houston Education Foundation board members will be at the BARn from 2 to 7 p.m. selling bratwurst and hot dogs to raise funds for the local charity which benefits the students in the Houston School District. Piney River will donate a portion of all pint sales from the day to HEF.

Scott Dill, superintendent at Houston schools, and other musical professionals in the district will sing and play for tips that will also be donated to HEF.

Lucas Clem and Stacey Uchtman, brewers at Piney River, have brewed two specialty beers that will be released exclusively for the benefit. “Teacher’s Pet” is an apple beer highlighting the flavor of apples in an easy to drink ale. “Apples in the Fall” is also an apple beer featuring the flavor of apples and spices commonly found in apple pie or apple butter.

The event is free and open to the public, including families. Andy’s Homemade Root Beer is a non-alcoholic option available at the BARn.
